RUSSIA AND EDUCATION

General info

Russia has a "Pioneering" history in world education. Many vast and humanly achievements in the education and social spheres proves that Russian education is not just one of the best in the world but a leader in science and other different branches of philosophical and social academic fields.

And surprisingly enough, Russian education with its prestigious and noble history is cheaper than anywhere else in the world but mind you, they still care for the high standards of their scholars.

Academic year structure

The academic year at the University includes
2 semesters (terms):

  • Autumn semester - September 1 to December 31
  • Spring semester - February 7 - June 30

Instruction and Grading

The most typical form of instruction at a University is a classical one, that is a lecture course with a final examination or a test, which a student is to pass usually within the set periods of academic term. In addition to lecture courses there are seminars, independent research, laboratory works, written assignments and other kinds of academic work.

The grades used are:

  • excellent - 5 (A or B on ECTS grading scale)
  • good - 4 (B or C)
  • satisfactory - 3 (D or E)
  • fail - 2 (FX or F)

Some courses are graded only with either pass or fail

Unlike other parts of the world, an examination is not a 2-3 hrs of paperwork and brain churning !!

In Russia, you are given the complete set of questions for a particular subject (exam), during the semester itself (sounds good doesn't it?).

On the day of the exam, the teacher/professor lets you choose an upturned Card on which will be 2-3 questions from its original set of around 40-60 questions. You are allowed an hour or so to prepare for your answers, then you go up to the teacher and explain your answers (this is the difficult part). If your answers are not satisfactory then the teacher may allow you a chance to get a good grade by asking you an additional question.

The result of your grade for the particular exam will be written on your "Zacheotnaya kniga" then itself (saves the torturous wait). "Zacheotnaya kniga" is your personal log book for all the exams and tests that you sit for. It is very important (crucial) that you do not loose it.

Language of Instruction

Practically all courses at the Academy are conducted in Russian. That is why a good command of Russian is required for enrolment in most university degree program's, and preparatory university course is needed.

You may also apply to the English-language classes for various specialties.
